Enjoyed the podcast lads. Agree with Mark on Cantona. He didn't show it in europe against top opposition but shone in the premiership against the dross. In hindsight, was the league really shit at the time? Until Wenger came along, Utd didn't have a credible rival in the 90s. Newcastle, Leeds and Blackburn were flashes in the pan.
The sterling careers of Colin Hendry, Tim Sherwood, Darren Peacock and Tony Dorigo post league wins (or in Peacock's case post blowing the league in hilarious fashion) indicate the league wasn't fantastic.
As does the record of English teams in Europe at that time, Arsenal being the only mid-90s exception. Different times though with quotas for foreign players etc, so hard to tell overall.
I'm guessing Rob Smyth has done about 15 articles on this subject, expect another soon considering his, and the guardian's, nostalgia filled content of late. That wardrobe full of 80s and 90s england and man u fanzines have earned him a few shillings lately.
A blog from Mark & JJ, the co-hosts of Okey Doke Football Podcast, about the creation of the show each week, reaction and opinion on current football news and more stuff
